De sfeer zat goed…
“Gewoon…omdat ik die muziek altijd zo aanstekelijk vind, sprak ik met een aantal kameraden over het oprichten van een klezmerband. Ik maakte een stappenplan, legde een bezetting vast en deed een oproep ‘muzikanten gezocht’ (…)”
Meer moet het soms niet zijn om een band uit de grond te stampen. In de woonkamer van frontman en oprichter Willem Buyse, werden in 2017 de eerste concrete plannen gemaakt voor het samenstellen van een nieuw klezmerorkest.
“(…) een paar eigen arrangementen, een muzikant of acht en we begonnen met repeteren. De sfeer zat goed en we werkten naar een eerste minitry-out.”
Intussen zijn ze met elf en vormen ze samen BAL MERKLEZ: het meest energieke, humoristische, opzwepende en ontroerende balkan-klezmerorkest van Belgische bodem. Een bende van dat soort kaliber die het niet nalaat om van elke gelegenheid een onvergetelijk feestje te maken.

Puur & onversneden
Met hun ietwat van de traditie afwijkende bezetting zetten ze zichzelf met een uniek klankenpallet op de kaart en willen ze hun publiek beroeren met traditionele maar ook zelfgeschreven nummers. Met een handvol arrangeurs uit eigen rangen gaan de zaken vooruit ten huize BAL MERKLEZ.

Hun repertoire bestaat uit de typisch ophitsende uptemponummers en de naar de keel grijpende tranentrekkers die ze naar eigen zeggen zo puur en onversneden mogelijk willen brengen. Kiezen voor dat naturelle doen ze heel bewust want het respect voor de authenticiteit van de muziek is een must voor de groep.

Afwisseling moet er zijn: ‘een hoek af’ versus ‘au sérieux’
Ze omschrijven zichzelf als "niet te oud en niet te jong” en zien dat absoluut als een voordeel. Er moet een flinke hoek af zijn om je volledig te kunnen smijten op een podium maar het is uiteraard meer dan feesten alleen en zoals dat bij de meeste dingen het geval is, heeft alles ook zijn sérieux.
Onderschat ze dus zeker niet, achter de prettig gestoorde façade zitten professionele en ambitieuze muzikanten die elk, vanuit hun eigen geschoolde achtergrond een bijdrage leveren aan de groep. Dat maakt hen bijzonder veelzijdig en zorgt ervoor dat ze, gewapend met veel vakkennis, elke nieuwe uitdaging kunnen trotseren.
Een orkest dat alle remmen losgooit en je spontaan even alles doet vergeten maar tegelijkertijd ook inzet op professionalisme en engagement, is zonder meer the best of both worlds.
Dat deze mix vruchten afwerpt, is bewezen toen BAL MERKLEZ in juli 2020 uitgeroepen werd als winnaar van de allereerste wedstrijdeditie van BLOW! to Woodstock. Daardoor mogen ze in juli 2021 het kot op stelten gaan zetten op het Woodstock der Blasmusik Festival in Oostenrijk.

Good vibes
“Nothing in particular, really... I have always experienced that kind of music as being very contagious, so I talked to some fellow musicians about creating a new klezmerband. I made a step-by-step plan, defined the instrumentation and I made an announcement: ‘musicians wanted’ (...)”
Sometimes that’s all it takes to get a music band off the ground. In 2017, in the living room of frontman and founder Willem Buyse, the first plans to put together a new klezmer orchestra were set in stone.
“(...) with some own arrangements and about eight musicians, we started rehearsing. The vibe was right and we started preparing a first mini try-out.”
Eventually, they grew to eleven musicians and together they’re BAL MERKLEZ: Belgium’s most energetic, humorous, invigorating and moving balkan klezmerorchestra. The kind of band that never misses an opportunity to turn any occasion into a dazzling and memorable party.
Pure and authentic
With an instrumentation that differs slightly from tradition, they put themselves on the musical map with a unique sound pallet always wanting to move their audience with both traditional and self-written songs. Thanks to a handful of arrangers from the group itself, they’re completely self-sufficient when it comes to arranging and composing music. That means at BAL MERKLEZ’S, business is booming.
They want to bring a repertoire as pure and authentic as possible including both the inciting, up-tempo songs as well as the typical tear jerkers.
The band places a high value on authenticity, which is reflected in the naturalness of their music.
Variety is the spice of life: “go crazy” versus “seriousness”
They describe themselves as “not too old and not too young” and consider this frame of mind as a massive benefit. Going crazy on stage requires a young openness of the musicians but it’s not all about partying and like most things in life there’s a time and place for everything. Therefore seriousness is just as important too to make things work and they believe they have struck this balance perfectly.
So, do not underestimate them: behind the wicked, fun loving façade, there are professional and ambitious musicians hiding, who, from each of their skilled backgrounds, contribute to the success of the band. This expertise and know-how is making them extremely versatile and therefore ready to take up any challenge.
An orchestra that can spontaneously make you forget all your sorrow and yet at the same time stays committed to its professionalism is, without doubt, the best of both worlds.
This mix was proven to bear fruit when BAL MERKLEZ won the very first edition of the contest BLOW! to Woodstock in July 2020.
Because of this win they have been invited to Austria to raise hell during the Woodstock der Blasmusik Festival in July 2021.

ENTRÉE EN CONNAISSANCE
Une ambiance super
“Rien de particulier...raffolé de cette musique, j’ai eu l’idée lumineuse de fonder une bande pratiquant la musique Klezmer. Heureusement pour moi, quelques copains musiciens se sont fait emballer par mon projet. J’ai rédigé un plan par étappes, fixé une instrumentation et lancé un appel: ‘Recherche de musiciens’.(…)”
Parfois c’est tout ce qu’il faut pour faire surgir en moins de rien un orchestre. En 2017, dans la salle de séjour du fondateur et leader Willem Buyse, les premiers plans concrets de la formation d’un nouvel orchestre Klezmer étaient prêts.

Entretemps, ils sont onze et forment ensemble BAL MERKLEZ: l’orchestre Balkan et Klezmer sur le sol belge, le plus énergique et humoristique débordant d’exubérance et d’émotions à la fois.
Une bande d’une telle envergure ne manque jamais de profiter de chaque occasion pour organiser une boum sans précédent.

Pur et authentique
Un peu différent de la composition d’orchestre habituelle ils se placent sur la carte avec une palette sonore unique voulant émouvoir le public avec des chansons aussi bien traditionnelles qu’originales.
Avec une poignée d’arrangeurs de leurs propres rangs, les affaires vont à merveille chez la maison BAL MERKLEZ.
Leur répertoire se compose aussi bien de chansons typiques à tempo rapide et entraînant que de celles prenant à la gorge par leur caractère pathétique et émouvant. Ils préfèrent jouer d’une façon pure et naturelle car ils respectent rigoureusement l’authenticité de ce genre de musique.
C’est un aspect indispensablement lié au propre de ce groupe.

Changement de décor: ‘la folie’ versus ‘le sérieux’
Les membres du groupe se définissent “ni trop vieux, ni trop jeunes” ce qui est un avantage incontestable d’après eux.
Réussir une performance sur un podium dépasse largement la capacité de faire la fête car, comme la plupart du temps, c’est le sérieux qui en est le complément.
Donc, ne les sous-estimez surtout pas! Derrière la façade amusante et comique se cachent des musiciens professionnels et ambitieux qui apportent leurs connaissances personnelles et contribuent ainsi au succès de l’ensemble toujours prêt à affronter chaque nouveau défi.

Un orchestre qui rejette toute contrainte et vous fait oublier spontanément chaque souci en excellant par son professionnalisme et son engagement, est sans doute le meilleur des deux mondes.
Que ce mix porte ses fruits a été prouvé en juillet 2020 quand BAL MERKLEZ a gagné la première édition du concours “BLOW! to Woodstock”. Une victoire qui les mettra sur l’affiche “Woodstock der Blasmusik Festival” en Autriche en juillet 2021. Allons faire la fête avec eux!
